'I was out before I hit the floor. I had a cup for coffee in my left hand and the pot of coffee in my right when it hit me. I was extremely short of breath and tiny white lights surrounded my decreasing field of vision. The break room had a tiled floor and I tried to leave, but never made it.'

"But, if you do not do this and maliciously make delay in it, I certify to you that, with the help of God, we shall powerfully enter into your country and shall make war against you in all ways and manners that we can, and shall subject you to the yoke and obedience of the Church and their Highnesses; we shall take you and your wives and your children, and shall make slaves of them, and as such shall sell and dispose of them as their Highnesses may command."
The Fierce People
The story of Ewat, the Calusa Indian Boy
Ewat was a Calusa Indian boy who lived on the southwestern portion of the peninsula the Spanish would rename the island of Flowers or Florida, as we know it today. Our historical fiction story begins in the early 1500s, as the Spanish conquest of the Caribbean was well underway. A decisive shift was slowly occurring throughout the new world concerning who controlled who? For the primitive Calusa tribe, who had always dominated their land, the change would come fast and hard and test 'The Fierce People.'
The southwestern portion of the Florida peninsula was paradise. The Calusa Indians were unaware of the pale-skinned invaders' movement or the Gregorian calendar. The Calusas had no written language, which technically meant they were functionally illiterate. Yet, they had been masters of their environment for over a thousand years.
The Caribbean islands fell like dominoes, most with little resistance. They were being overrun, and every aspect of the indigenous people was changing with the arrival of foreign invaders who wore shiny clothes and helmets and used rifles and cannons fired with exploding gunpowder.
Ed Donlin, Author has 2 books in pre-production. One is a Sci-fi fantasy about a comatose hospital patient who is visited by Space Probes and changes the world. XXXXXX XXXXX
His most recent book is 'Ewat, the Calusa Indian Boy which tells the story of daily life in the Calusa nation and the encounter with Ponce de Leon, Conqueror.
In 1500, a male child was born into the Calusa Indian Nation. His nickname was Ewat, and for the next 22 years, he grew to be a skilled teenage hunter, an interpreter, and a translator.
Ewat battled the invasive wild boars, named Pigs, by the Taino Cuban Indian refugees. The previously unknown creatures arrived with shipwrecked Spanish survivors off treasure Galleons returning to Spain but blown by storms onto the Keys. The Calusas kept the Spaniards as slaves but banned interaction with the strange animals because of various strange illnesses.
The Calusas were known as the ‘Fierce People’ by friend and foe, and Ewat and his friends grew to be valued warriors in this historical fiction story about Ponce de Leon and the ever-elusive Fountain of Youth.
Although this isn’t necessarily a children’s book, it will thrill and excite readers of all ages while learning the rare story of a battle between a primitive indigenous people and a modern invading force who used ‘lightning’ weapons.
